Mall Walkers Contest

Spring Valley

by Munch Wolf

A thunderous sound echoed through the barren, dingy hallways of Spring Valley Mall. Another rang out, and an unholy body splattered over a railing, landing in the fountain down below.

"I hate zombies. They're all stinky, and rotten, and uncool," Michelle whined to her friend as she fired her shotgun into another walking corpse.

"I know," Valerie chirped as she stepped over the now re-deceased body, "they're worse than drunken frat boys."

Two more undead figures lumbered out of a nearby sporting goods store. Two shots from Valerie's handgun and they both collapsed to the ground.

Michelle glanced around for more attackers before whispering, "How much longer? I don't recognize this area of the mall."

Valerie pointed towards a burnt out store in the distance. "We'll find it over there, just beyond the caved-in floor, and across that plank."

"Gee, remember when shopping was fun?" Michelle grunted as they headed off through the dankness. "It used to be just sitting around, watching guys, and buying earrings. Now it's, is that a mannequin or some dead guy who wants to eat my brains."

Valerie emptied another chamber into a figure that was crawling out of the pit. Pieces of skull and blood splashed across her leather boots. She sighed, "Yeah, I miss the days when you could just find a guy that was breathing, take him in the back seat of his car, and the only worry you had was if the police would knock on the window."

"Or if your parents found out," Michelle chuckled, "I miss getting grounded." She pointed her barrel at another walking dead that was climbing toward her, and unloaded a shell into it. "Well, I'm out of bullets, is it much further?"

"Right this way," Val said as she stepped off the plank into the scorched boutique, "in the back."

Michelle peered nervously into the darkness. "Are you sure this is even the right store. What if they moved or closed before all hell broke loose?"

"Trust me, it's just the thing we need." Valerie fetched a lighter from her pocket and flicked it on. Dim shadows danced around the store as the duo proceeded toward the back. One image lurched differently than the rest. Val raised her pistol and pulled the trigger. Click. The inhuman creature charged forward.

"Oh darn, I'm out of bullets too," gasped Valerie as she dropped her gun and reached behind her back. "Good think I brought Mr. Machete."

One slice through the air and the abomination's gory head danced off its shoulders and bounced across Michelle's arm. She gagged, "Hey, watch were you swing that thing. You just got bits of its brain on my new T-shirt."

Valerie was still watching the twitching body as it slumped down to the messy floor. She reached down by its feet and picked up a small, metallic tube. "Sorry, but at least we found what we were looking for today."

Valerie carefully pulled off the top, twisted the knob on the bottom, and pressed the lip-gloss to her mouth. "Raspberry, my favorite."

Michelle giddily grabbed a few for herself. "Wow, this trip was definitely worth it. I can't wait to come back next week for my prom dress."
